This week, we focused on gathering and representing data in Math class. The Room 18 students completed their die-roll graphs, and we have finished collecting our t-shirt colour data. We will begin representing our data in our Graph Books this coming week. The students each made a prediction about what they think will be the most popular t-shirt colour, then they will tally their numbers and graph their data. Collecting the t-shirt data allowed us to visit other classes and to talk to students and staff in the school! Once we have finished with our t-shirt data, the students will get the opportunity to choose their own topic to collect data on. We will visually represent our data in two different ways: bar graph and pictograph. We have been continuing to work on the Zones of Regulation--developing more strategies to help us get into the Green Zone (that's where we're calm enough to be in the moment). We have tried some mindfulness visualisations to help reduce stress and anxiety. We have also been working on focusing on what we're doing in the moment without thinking about the other stuff that sometimes pops into our minds. Our research projects are almost complete--we are planning to finish typing them up this week, and will plan to present them the week after. The Room 18 students have been very excited about designing their own PowerPoint presentations! We are excited to jump back into another week of fun and learning in Room 18!

This week in Room 18, we have been working hard on discussing expected and unexpected behaviours, especially when we're in assemblies and in large group gatherings. I am proud to report that, for the most part, Room 18 students behaved in expected ways! They especially shone during the whole-school assembly on Thursday. We have several other projects on the go in Room 18. We have read up to Chapter 3 in Jacob Two-Two Meets The Hooded Fang (although some Room 18 students have been so excited about it that they have read ahead!). We will continue to work on our novel study in the coming week. Another main focus is the “Zones of Regulation”-- Ms. R has been teaching Room 18 students about the Zones, and we have been helping the students to create their own “Zones” booklets, with personalised strategies for when they're in each zone. We have almost finished doing our research for our research projects. For our first individual research projects, each student could choose their topic (topics chosen were: mountain lions, bedrock, hippos, and secret agents). Each student read a book about their topic, and found a website, collecting facts from each source. Our next step is to type or print up the final draft of the project, then present it to the class! Students will be given the option of inviting other staff and students to their presentation, and they will have the option to have a video taken of their presentation to send home to their parents! I am expecting that we will be finished our presentations in two or three weeks. I am proud of the students' hard work so far! For Math, we are working on Statistics and Probability (as well as doing some review from last semester). We have collected data from flipping a coin and rolling a die, and we will be graphing our data. We have discussed how each side of a coin has a 1-in-2 (½) chance of being flipped. Each side of the die has a 1/6 chance. Even though each side of the die has the same probability of being rolled, our data aren't spread out evenly! That's where “chance” comes in. Room 18 students eagerly guessed what each roll would be. We will be making our own “graph booklets” next week. |
